August 2012 – Dad Of Two Killed By Parking Barrier At Son’s Football Ground Car Park

Council admits safety failure after dad-of-two was killed by parking barrier at son’s football ground

Andrew Matthews, 51, was pulling in to the car park ahead of his son’s football match when the loose bar smashed through his windscreen

A council has admitted failing to act over warnings about an insecure car park barrier which killed a devoted dad-of-two.

Andrew Matthews, 51, was pulling in to the parking area ahead of his son’s football match when the loose bar smashed through his windscreen.

An inquest into his death revealed that two people had warned the council about the barrier three weeks before the fatal incident at Foxhills sportsground in Scunthorpe in August 2012.

North Lincolnshire Council today admitted the health and safety failures at Hull Crown Court.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said: “It was all a matter of chance that this gentleman died rather than someone else. This is a tragedy beyond compare.
